I have finished sewing the 2 1/2" strips together for the Wash Day Stars quilt.
When I started this, I had about 19-22 different fabrics. I wondered how I could corral these into a somewhat logical arrangement for future cutting/sewing. I realized that it was very possible to have a repeat of the resulting 4 patches. To try and eliminate this possibilty, I came up with this idea.
I laid out all the different fabric strips in small piles..Then I chose one and continued to match that one type with various others until it was all used up. I then chose another, matched that one with others the same way. This prevented a possibility of duplication of sewn strips.
This is where I am now.
I now am faced with keeping in order oodles of 2 1/2" wide segments from each strip that I am cutting. I plan keep all the strips with a common fabric together in a baggie, hoping that later I can continue to keep from duplicating 4 patches by using the same method of choosing as I did before...
I usually break up this same-thing monotony by sewing in between, but am afraid I'll get confused, so I'm going by the directions in the magazine this time.
I would love to hear how ya'll keep order while doing something like this. I am early enough in this process to rethink ideas, or at least keep them for future reference....
I will be adding my photo with others in Sarah's post on Friday. Take a look at what others are doing.
This is EXACTLY the same process I use when trying to keep away from duplicated strips/strings. There must be an easier way, but I haven't found it. :) mdmontalvo@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI kind of got dizzy as I was reading... did you as you were sewing??? :-) Haven't done a quilt like this, but will keep checking in on your progress. The fabrics are so cute!
ReplyDeleteSound like you've got a pretty good method. I think I'd just take the chances of duplicates as if these blocks are so small, it's going to be a busy quilt and who will notice. I do, though, want to see how you progress with this!
ReplyDeleteI just looked up some images for Wash Day Stars quilt and you are going to have one spectacular quilt!
I love the fabric choices! The will be a beautiful quilt. Cant wait to see your progress. I followed you on my google reader :)
ReplyDeleteI use wooden containers and keep it all in once place. Kinda like what you have going there. I love organization though too;) Good Luck! Have fun too:)
ReplyDeleteI try to safety pin groups together....I get too rushed to get stuff in and out of bags....isn't that awful to have to admit? :)
ReplyDeleteEver use those pre-made fruit or veggie trays? I like those for keeping pieces sorted.
ReplyDeleteGlad you found something that works for you!
Good for you - that definitely deserves multiple whoop whoops!!!
